Colored ebonite fountain pen UMESAKI, available in a limited quantity, features Sailor Pen's special 21K gold KOP Naginata Togi nib, and is crafted with the Chirashi technique for an intricate yet stately allure. As with other models in this annually released series, the body's design is inspired by a masterpiece of traditional Japanese art, expressed with colored ebonite. This year's model is Sailor's interpretation of "Plum Estate in Kameido" by Hiroshige Utagawa as published in the "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". Regarded highly by the world, as evident in Vincent van Gogh's reproduction "Flowering Plum Tree", they brought the image to life with UMESAKI.

Plum Estate in Kameido was a plum orchard situated behind Kameido Tenjin Shrine, that became famous for "Garyubai", meaning a plum tree shaped like a sleepingĀ dragon. It was a hugely popular sightseeing spot in spring, even known to be cherished by Yoshimune Tokugawa, the 8th Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate.Ā The portrayal of sightseers enjoying the view from beyond the fence is testimony to the estate's popularity. Depicting closer objects as close-ups and farther objects inĀ smaller size was Hiroshige's preferred composition. He also succeeded in giving the tree a convincing woody texture by layering paint.

Engraved with a serial number, each piece is unique. UMESAKI is a limited edition of only 500 pieces worldwide, made available only through authorized Sailor Bespoke dealers. Each pen is individually numbered.

UMESAKI comes in a new dark brown wooden gift box inĀ the image of plum wood, different from packaging forĀ past models of this series.Ā The inside is lined with exquisitely elegant crape fabric, aĀ reproduction of traditional "Chirimen" that has been cherished in Japan since ancient times, and adorned withĀ sleeves in color inspired by dainty plum blossoms.Ā The inside is lined with an exquisitely elegant crape, Chirimen, fabric, a reproduction of aĀ traditional material that has existed in Japan since ancient times.

This special Naginata Togi nib allows you to write with a thin line when holding the pen vertically upright, or with a thicker line when holding the pen at a lower writing angle. In this way it’s similar to a Sailor Zoom nib. It also is ground so that it writes thicker on the cross stroke and thinner on the down stroke, like an Architect nib. It’s really a blend of Zoom and Architect, which is quite unique and not available from any other pen manufacturer.
